Sometimes, late in the evening, Margaret sits in her chair beneath those frames and listens to Eli’s song play softly from the radio.
Her house is modest.
The furniture is mismatched.
The lamp beside her recliner buzzes if the bulb loosens.
There is nothing glamorous about the scene.
That feels right to her.

And every single time, no matter how many years pass, she whispers the same words into the soft light of her small American living room.
“Look what one meal can do.”
Then, after a moment, because she knows exactly who else is listening, she adds in a voice full of all the love grief never managed to kill,
“Look what we did, boys.”
