Ingredients

  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 1 ounce freshly brewed espresso hot and strong
  • 1 ounce coffee liqueur like Kahlúa
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup adjust to taste
  • Ice cubes
  • Coffee beans for garnish (traditionally 3)
  • Optional additions:
  • A dash of vanilla extract for warmth
  • A splash of Irish cream for a creamier texture
  • Shaved chocolate or cocoa powder dusting for a dessert-style finish

Method

  1. Brew the espresso. Make a fresh shot of espresso (or very strong coffee if that’s what you have). Let it cool for 1–2 minutes so it doesn’t melt the ice instantly.
  2. Fill the shaker. Add vodka, coffee liqueur, espresso, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker filled halfway with ice.
  3. Shake vigorously. Shake hard for 15–20 seconds to chill the drink and create the frothy, velvety top layer.
  4. Strain and serve. Strain into a chilled martini or coupe glass.
  5. Garnish. Float three coffee beans on top before serving.
