Ingredients

  • 4 ounces tequila blanco or reposado, good quality
  • 2 ounces fresh lime juice about 2 limes
  • 2 ounces orange liqueur such as Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • 1 ounce simple syrup or agave nectar optional, for sweetness
  • Ice cubes
  • Coarse salt for rimming glasses
  • Lime wedges for garnish
  • Optional variations: sliced jalapeño for heat muddled fresh fruit like mango or strawberries for a fruity twist, or mezcal for a smoky edge.

Method

  1. Run a lime wedge around the rim of two short glasses. Dip the rims into a shallow dish of coarse salt to coat. Set aside.
  2. In a cocktail shaker, combine the tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and simple syrup (if using). Fill the shaker with ice.
  3. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 20 seconds until the shaker feels frosty in your hands.
  4. Strain the mixture into the prepared glasses filled with fresh ice.
  5. Garnish each with a lime wedge and enjoy immediately.
